Chapter 18

When Chris had returned his call and invited him to join him at Foley’s, Paul didn’t hesitate to accept. He had walked past Foley’s Public House a hundred times in the past year, delivering flowers to the fancy apartment complex built on the block directly behind the bar, but he’d never been inside, which was kind of ridiculous since the little pub had a reputation for serving some of the best food in Midtown Atlanta at crazy-cheap prices and was less than three blocks from Paul’s own apartment.

Tonight, that was going to change. Tonight, a lot of things were going to change. Tonight, he was meeting Chris’s teammates and their significant others and, if he was reading Chris right, not just as a friend but as someone Chris was dating. The prospect of that made Paul’s stomach clench, and he wasn’t quite sure whether it was in a good or a bad way. He probably wouldn’t know until he was in the middle of things.

When he’d decided to walk the three long blocks to the pub, he’d thought the physical exertion would burn off some of the anxiety he was feeling. Unfortunately, it seemed to be doing the exact opposite, and by the time he was standing by the door of the pub, he’d worked himself into a panic, imagining all sorts of scenarios that ranged from merely awkward to completely hellish.

Plus, either he’d totally underestimated the difference in time it took him to walk to the pub when he didn’t have to be mindful about his delivery or the power of anxiety had propelled him much faster than he usually walked because he ended up at the door of Foley’s a full half hour before he was scheduled to meet Chris. That left him the choice of either hanging around outside like a guy who was waiting for someone, or going inside and sitting by himself. The fact that his shirt was sticking to him made his decision easy: he’d go inside and hopefully cool and calm down enough to not be a sweaty, anxious mess by the time Chris arrived.

It took a few moments for his eyes to adjust to the darker interior, but when they did, he made his way to the long mahogany bar and had a seat on one of the barstools. He picked up a drink menu and was pleasantly surprised to find a huge range of non-alcoholic drinks. He was still trying to choose when the bartender slid a coaster in front of him.

“You’re new,” the tattooed woman stated. She stuck out her hand. “Meghan Sullivan.”

“Paul Decker,” he replied, shaking her hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“Likewise, Paul Decker.” She flashed a grin at him. “Looking to start off the evening light?” she asked, nodding at the menu in his hand.

“I’m a low-octane kind of person in general,” he said, referring to the title of the menu. “What do you suggest?”

“What do you like? Sweet? Savory? Citrus? Spicy? We have a lot of options.
